Blast from the past: Birds FC

Birds FC was formed during the 1960’s in Marabastad. Two persons were instrumental in its formation, namely Iqbal Sharief and Amir Hasware. There were many other as well but these two were the backbone of the club, which they took from amateur to semi-professional and then to professional football during 1983 and 1986. The only Kokani administered club to play pro football.

This photo was taken at the Cup Final (E TVL) match against Liverpool in Benoni in 1981. The pre-match preparations were enormous and the atmosphere at the Benoni Stadium was Electric. Birds outnumbered the local Benoni supporters. The match ended in a 1 all draw, and we shared the Trophy.
